Manchester Citys German midfielder Dietmar Hamann could be making a return to his homeland according to reports today. The veteran 36-year-old midfielder has featured only sporadically for City this season, and German second division side 1860 Munich are believed to be eyeing Hamann up for a move back to Germany.
Hamann made 14 appearances for Mark Hughes side last season, of which nine in the Premiership and a further five in various cup competitions for City. Since the arrival of the like of Kompany and de Jong, both from German football, Hamann has struggled to get much of a look in at Eastlands, and may opt for a move away. His last league appearance dates back to December in a 1-1 draw at Fulham.
Hamann has been with City for three seasons, and previously had spells in English football with both Liverpool and Newcastle. Hamann has, of course, ingrained himself into English football legend by becoming the last ever play to score a goal at the old Wembley when his free-kick helped Germany win the World Cup qualifier that precipitated Kevin Keagans resignation.
A return to Germany may be an attractive prospect for Hamann, who started his career at 1860s cross-city rivals Bayern, where he played for six seasons before switching to English football.
A move for the experienced midfielder could also work out well for 1860, who failed to get promotion back to the German top-flight last season finishing a disappointing mid-table. They have a number of extremely promising young talents in their squad contributing several players to Germanys U19 European Cup winning team of last summer. An experienced head in the shape of Hamann may be just what the young team needs.
