Recent rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Wolfsburgs Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko seem to be a bit far off the mark. The German club insist that despite half of Europe, including The Gunners, being linked with their top striker, they are yet to receive one official bid for the former FK Teplice striker. After finishing last season in the Bundesliga with 26 goals for champions VfL Wolfsburg a number of European clubs were thought to have registered their interest including Arsenal, AC Milan and Barcelona, who were all believed to be keen on Dzeko. However, with Wolfsburg due to start pre-season training next week, their president Hans Dieter Poetsch insists that they arent intending to sell Dzeko, or any of their other stars, who caught the eye as Wolfsburg swept magnificently to the title in the second half of the season. Dzeko played a key role in Wolfsburgs transformation from mid-table filler to Bundesliga champions. After arriving at the beginning of the 2007/08 season, Dzeko struggled initially to find his feet after looking like a promising prospect in the Czech league. However, this season has been a different story with Dzeko hitting goals with both his left and right foot, and setting up a magnificent record equalling partnership in the German league with Brazilian colleague Grafite. The pair between them got 54 goals, equalling a record set in the 1970s in the process. Arsenal were believed to have enquired about Dzeko, but have been clearly rebuffed, as have AC Milan who were thought to have offered up to €40 million. Nevertheless the local German paper Wolfsburg Allgemeiner seems to think that the club are looking at transfers and have highlighted the Real Madrid pair of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Javier Saviola as possible options. Either this is total speculation on their part or Wolfsburg despite their official stance that Dzeko isnt for sale are preparing for his transfer and are looking at replacements. With Wolfsburg guaranteed a place in next seasons group stages of the Champions League they wont be short for cash, so they wont be obliged to sale Dzeko. For now, therefore, it seems as if Arsenal do want to bolster their forward ranks, it wont be with Dzeko. Posted by Walter Townsend on Thursday, 18th June 2009 (Average rating 0 from 0 votes.
