The Italian press are speculating today that Roma could be lining up Andriy Shevchenko as a replacement for Mirko Vucinic, if, as widely rumoured, Manchester United make a move for their Montenegrin forward. Speculation has been intense in the Italian capital that Manchester United are monitoring the availability of Mirko Vucinic, as revealed yesterday on aboutaball.co.uk, and consider the former Lecce striker as a pre-eminent target as they look to reconstruct their forward line following the departure of Ronaldo. News that Roma are already considering potential players to acquire in Vucinics stead, suggests that United might not be far from making a concrete offer. With Roma expected to demand around €20 million for their striker, they will have plenty of funds available to plough back into the squad, although some of the money is expected to be invested in the team to achieve some financial stability for next season. Roma failed to reach the Champions League for next season, so cut-backs are expected and at least one high profile departure, such as Vucinic, would come as no surprise. Shevchenko is seen in the Italian capital as the ideal replacement for Vucinic, and Chelsea would certainly be open to offers for their Ukrainian flop. Shevchenko is expected back in West London for the beginning of the season, but is widely expected to permanently leave Stamford Bridge in the summer. He played little role in AC Milans season under Carlo Ancelotti in 2008/09, so there would be no reason to expect his former boss, now at Chelsea, to welcome him with open arms. Despite several lacklustre seasons, both on loan at AC Milan and in the Premiership, there isnt expected to be a shortage of interest. Dynamo Kiev have expressed a desire to bring their former hero back to his homeland. They have lost ground to rivals Shakhtar, who claimed the first ever European trophy for a Ukrainian side, knocking Dynamo out in the semi finals, so bringing Shevchenko back would certainly cheer up the depressed Dyanmo fans. Yesterday it was also reported that Monaco were offered the forward. The French side are able to offer vastly higher salaries than other French clubs because of the tax-haven status the Principality is afforded, meaning what players earn they largely retain.
