Reports from France suggest that Fulham may be making a bid on Bordeauxs Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh. The striker has been touted for a move to the Arsenal, but it now seems as if Fulham may look to jump their London rivals by making an offer first.
The Bordeaux centre-forward has been looking for a move away from French football, despite playing a full role in helping his side vanquish Lyon this season, and end their seven-year domination at the top of Ligue 1.
As recently as last winter Chamakh was quoted as saying he was hoping for a move to English football, but was very precise in stating that he was looking out for a move to a big-side, and not a little one, such as Sunderland, in a clear reference to Djibril Cisses move to Wearside.
Whether Fulham would therefore match up with Chamakhs rather high self-estimation of his own talent remains to be seen. This season Chamakh managed to break double figures for the first time in terms of goal scoring striking up an excellent partnership with Argentine centre-forward Fernando Cavenaghi.
Chamakh has long been a player known to a number of Premiership clubs, and he has been sporadically linked with a move to English shores. Chamakhs contract expires at the end of next season, and given his already well publicised desire to play in the Premiership, Laurent Blanc, the Bordeaux boss, may decide the time is right to sell the Moroccan on, rather than allowing him to leave for free in 2010.
Fulham had an outstanding season under Roy Hodgson, and may consider Chamakh with his razor sharp pace the ideal foil for Andy Johnson, as they look to build on the very promising foundation. Hodgson, an experienced manager around Europe, certainly has a nose for a good player, and has made some shrewd moves in the transfer market since arriving at Craven Cottage.
