After news that Chelsea are thinking of making a bid for Ashley Youngs service, news from the continent indicates that Barcelona have now registered a tentative interest in the England international.
Young is already believed to be unsettled at Villa Park following the departure of Gareth Barry to Manchester City, and has already warned his current employers they must match his ambition if they wish to hang onto him.
The former Watford winger was one of Villas best players last season, and following their failure to make the Champions League, a number of clubs including Liverpool and Chelsea were understood to have enquired as to Youngs availability.
So far, all approaches for Young have been firmly rebuffed, but news the European champions are considering a move may well encourage Young to become more vociferous in his demands for a move away from Villa Park.
Barcelona have been frustrated in their attempts to sign Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich, with the German side holding out for a massive €65 million for their French star. With the trail to Ribery growing cold, Barcelona have now turned their attention to Young, who is seen as an ideal candidate to join the Nou Camp side.
Whilst Barcelona are the current European champions, concerns are growing in Catalunya about Real Madrids win-or-bust transfer policy, and feel they may need to match their perennial rivals with a few nig-name signings of their own. The arrival of Young therefore would certainly fit the bill, as he is one of Englands brightest prospects.
Villa fans are therefore in for a nervous wait to see if ONeill can persuade Young his future lies in Birmingham. Young side a new deal last autumn to extend his deal to the 2012 season, so Villa would certainly be able to demand a hefty fee for their left winger, but his departure would leave a gaping hold in the Villa squad exacerbating the earlier loss of Gareth Barry.
