Reports today suggest that Harry Redknapp is considering proposing a swap deal between Tottenham and Spartak Moscow, as he attempts to off-loan Roman Pavlyyuchenko and bring in Spartaks Brazilian sensation Welliton. Pavlyyuchenkos time at Spurs has been nothing short of a disaster, and with the Russian forward already stating his intention to head for the White Hart Lane exit door over the winter transfer window, interest has been mooted from several clubs back in his homeland as well as Besiktas. However, one interesting proposal that might tempt Spurs into more business with Spartak Moscow is the option of trying to persuade them to part with their current top scorer Welliton, and using Pavlyuchenko as bait in the deal. Welliton has been in sensational form for Spartak since arriving from Goias, and is only the second ever foreign forward to break to 20-goals mark in one season, after notching 21 as Spartak sealed second place in the league behind Rubin Kazan. Many pundits have been quick to draw comparisons with his compatriot Wagner Love, the former CSKA Moscow striker, as both are small in stature and quick over the ground. Nevertheless Welliton is also much braver and also better with his head. At 23-years-old Welliton still has plenty of time to mature into a really good forward, so could be an excellent purchase for Tottenham. Nevertheless after having their fingers burnt on Pavlyuchenko, Spurs may not be too keen to rush into any deal to bring Welliton to North-London. Furthermore having seen the acclimatisation problems that former CSKA striker Jo has undergone during his time at Manchester City and subsequently at Everton and the goal drought that former Zenit goal-machine Pavel Pobrebnyak is suffering from at his new Bundesliga club, Tottenham might proceed with caution. Tottenham have been linked already with several strikers at whom they are supposedly looking, including the Spanish based pair of Sergio Aguerro and Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, with Defoe scoring so many goals, it is open to debate whether the club have even made acquiring another striker a priority, even if Pavlyuchenko makes an exit as expected.
