Reports from Spain suggest that Birmingham City are planning to muscle in on a deal that Valencia and Roma are preparing to send Serb striker Nikola Zigic from La Liga to Serie A. Alex McLeish is thought to have made the acquisition of a striker a top priority over the transfer window, and reckons that Zigic could be the ideal striker.
Zigic has been plying his trade at Valencia for 2.5 seasons, but has never found the form that prompted Los Che to shell out a significant amount to bring the former Racing Santander striker to the Mestalla. The tall striker, who stands at over 67 has struggled to find his feet, and has been the target of much abuse from the Valencia fans angry at a player who has cost their financially ailing club a lot of money.
Roma had been thought to be the most obvious destination for the wantaway Serb, but Birmingham City are now believed to be tracking his availability. Zigics agent has already described the move to Roma as perfect, so Birmingham may have their work cut-out if they are to divert him away from the Eternal City.
Alex McLeish has struggled to drum up interest in the Blues and has already been turned down by Standard Lieges Milan Jovanovic, another Serb, who has been attracting interest following some good performances in the Champions League for the Belgians.
Another possible option is Austrian international Marc Janko, another tall striker, who has enjoyed some excellent form this season for Red Bull Salzburg, and has been called into the national side recently, is another who has been tipped for a move to the Midlands, but that trail seems to have gone somewhat cold.
