NAME:

Betfair
REVIEW: Betfair.com is a fascinating gambling creation, whereby the customers on the Internet play the role of both bookie and punter (i.e. you can lay and place bets). You only need take a quick scan through the odds of the huge selection of football matches available to realise that they are, on the whole, vastly better than the odds you are offered at the conventional bookies. I suspect a number of conventional bookies are, in fact, using Betfair.com to make a vast amount of money from the less experienced punters.

Placing a normal bet

I myself have started to make a nice sum of money from Betfair.com. With gambling there is always a risk and you are unlikely to work out a way of beating the system, but with Betfair.com I believe your risk drops and the potential rewards increase. The trick is to view the Betfair.com odds alongside those of Ladbrokes, William Hill and the other big players. Let's face it, 99.9% of the time bookies get it right and that’s why they make so much money. If you notice any large discrepancies between Betfair.com odds and the bookie odds then you should take up the Betfair.com odds. I recommend only doing this when there is a noticeable difference in the odds of the favorites to win; sometimes odds for the outsides become silly - eg: I put £1 on Southampton to beat Man U at 14-1! Ok Man U won but I think it was worth risking a quid.

The way I’ve made a fair amount of money is betting on games that will have more than 2.5 goals. If you visit the spread-betting site Sporting Index and view their buy/sell values for number of goals in a game you’ll get a good indication of how many goals are likely to be scored. Again, like before, Sporting Index rarely get these things wrong as if they do it costs them a lot of money! Pick out the games where Sporting Index think there will be a lot of goals and put your bet on Betfair.com, you’ll normally get odds of 1.80+ even if the game involves Man City!

Laying odds

The unique thing about Betfair.com is being able to lay odds - if you’re sure something isn’t going to happen you can offer odds on it. Laying odds is far more risky and I wouldn’t recommend doing it unless you know what you’re doing. I’m currently looking to start laying some odds on games, I’ll update this article if I’m successful.
