NOTES: The championship was played in the calendar year from 1965 to 1984, but moved to a winter season for the 1985-86 edition until 1991-92. The professional J-League was introduced in 1993 and the championship is once again played in the calendar year, finishing in December. It is played in two stages, with the winners of each stage meeting in an end of season championship play-off to decide the overall winner. When one team wins both stages, this becomes unnecessary.
