| The format for the seventh edition of the European Championships was slightly modified to incorporate semi finals after the group phase whereas previously the group winners had gone directly into the final. Frenchman and future UEFA president Michel Platini was the undisputed star of the tournament in his home country, scoring an incredible nine goals in five games as he lead a magnificent France team to success. |
