Germany’s road to Euro 2008: Consummate progress

Germany qualified with little difficulty for Euro 2008 with a second place finish in Group D comfortably finishing 10 points ahead of the Republic of Ireland, who finished in a distant third. With only 1 defeat, at home to the Czech Republic when they had already qualified, Germany can be rightly pleased with their performance.

European Championship History: Germany

With 3 wins (19872, 1980 and 1996), 2 runner's up positions (1976 and 1992) and 1 more semi final appearance (1988), Germany are the most successful team in the history of the European Championship. With 10 straight qualifications, a run starting in 1972, they have been one of the most consistent performers at the tournament after they failed to make it to the first tournament they attempted to qualify for in 1968.

The top German scorer in the Bundesliga has been drafted into the German team for Euro 2008 and if he can maintain his impressive league form then the 23 year old goals could fire Germany to their first tournament success in the new century.

Germany – Questions to be answered by tournament favourites

The record winners of the European Championships have once again been installed as the bookies favourites for the tournament. For those who recall their last two outing at the European Championships that may come as something of a surprise, but for those who look at their recent World Cup form that position is justified.
