European Championship History: Switzerland

The Swiss have qualified for three European Championship tournaments, all since the expansion of the tournament from 8 to 16 teams in 1996. However, their record once they have qualified isn’t impressive; they have yet to win a game, finishing bottom of the group on both occasions. Therefore hopes will be high that they can at least improve on that record when they co-host the tournament this summer.

Switzerland's key man - Patrick Mueller

Despite being a major doubt for the tournament just weeks ago, Lyon’s centre-back Patrick Mueller now looks to have a genuine chance of making it into the tournament. A cruciate knee ligament injury back in December threatened to ruin his tournament, but after excellent progress Mueller has been back in the side and played in the recent friendly victory over Slovakia.

Player to Watch

Switzerland's one to watch - Gokhan Inler

There are a number of outstanding young Swiss prospects to choose from at Euro 2008 including Liverpool’s new arrival Philipp Degen, 24 year old Gelson Fernandes and 19 year old Eren Derdiyok, who scored on his debut at Wembley in March. However, perhaps the player the most likely to have a strong impact at the tournament is Gokhan Inler.

Switzerland - Dark Horse Hosts?

Whilst many pundits have dismissed the threat of both co-hosts at Euro 2008, a cursory glance at the Swiss squad will tell you that Switzerland especially have a great chance of making it through to the quarter finals. What Switzerland may lack in football history they are making up for in youthful enthusiasm and an exciting and exuberant squad has been put together that has a great chance, thanks to the relatively kind placement into Group A, of making it to the knock-out stages.
