The first World Cup was the brainchild of frenchmen Jules Rimet and Henri Delaunay and was awarded to Uruguay in recognition of their two victories in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games football competitions. Only four European teams made the long boat trip to South America. They were joined by seven teams from the host continent plus the USA and Mexico.
