The fifth World Cup was played in Switzerland with twelve teams
from Europe plus Brazil and Uruguay from South America, Mexico and Korea. There
were four groups of four but the two seeded teams in each group only played the
two unseeded teams with a play-off to split teams level on points. Germany were
back for the first time since the war and Scotland came for the first time.
