The sixth World Cup was played in Sweden and included all the
British home nations - Wales and Northern Ireland for the first time. Again,
there were sixteen teams present - twelve from Europe, three from South America
and the Mexicans. Seventeen-year-old Pele burst onto the scene for Brazil and Frenchman
Just Fontaine hit an all-time record thirteen goals. England were weakened by
the loss of Tommy Taylor, Roger Byrne and Duncan Edwards in the Munich air
disaster just months before the tournament.
