The seventh World Cup was the third played in South America and included five nations from the host continent and ten from Europe. Mexico were the sixteenth team present as the format was unchanged for the first time. The group match between Italy and Chile will forever be remembered as the Battle of Santiago - a violent and bad-tempered match refereed by England's Ken Aston.
