The tenth World Cup saw three points awarded for a win for the
first time and a second group phase was added in place of the quarter and semi
finals. East and West Germany met on the football field for the first and only
time and the Dutch unleashed 'Total Football'. There were nine nations from
Europe, four from South America, plus Australia, Zaire and Haiti - all competing
for a brand new trophy.
