World Cup 1978 Guide
World Cup -
Argentina 1978
Group I ¦ Group II ¦
Group III ¦ Group IV ¦ Top Scorers
The eleventh World Cup was played in Argentina against a
backdrop of General Videla's hard-line totalitarian regime, which provoked Johan
Cruyff to boycott the tournament and there were suspicions of match fixing as
Argentina thumped Peru 6-0 to reach the final and subsequently carry off the
trophy. There were ten teams from Europe, only three from South America, plus
Tunisia, Mexico and Iran.
