The fifteenth World Cup again retained the same format but the
make-up of teams changed slightly with thirteen coming from Europe, four from
South America, three from Africa, two from Asia, plus Mexico and the hosts. For
the first time, the final went to a penalty shoot-out and there were big stories
off the pitch. Diego Maradona failed a drugs test and in Colombia football
really did become a matter life and death as defender Andres Escobar was shot
after scoring an own goal against the USA. On the field, Oleg Salenko scored
five in one game and Roger Milla made a comeback to score at the age of 42.
