World Cup 1998 Guide
World Cup -
France 1998
Groups ¦ Second
Round ¦ Quarters ¦ Semis ¦ Final ¦ Top Scorers
The sixteenth World Cup saw the first increase in the number of finalists since Spain in 1982. The jump from 24 to 32 competing nations meant a new format of 8 groups of 4 with the top two teams in each going through to a straight knock-out phase. There were 15 teams from Europe, 5 from South America, 5 from Africa, 4 from Asia and 3 from North & Central America. The final was won by France but will be remembered for the mystery surrounding Ronaldo's fit before the game.
