Confederations Cup 2001 – Japan and South Korea

The 5th edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup was played in Japan and South Korea from the 30th of May – 10th June 2001. Eight teams took part in the tournament, which was staged at three venues in Japan and three in South Korea. The teams were split into two groups of four with the top two in each group going through into the semi finals. For Japan and South Korea it was a dress rehearsal for their hosting of World Cup 2002 and for FIFA it was a chance to test the logistics of co-hosting.

The qualified teams were: South Korea (host), Japan (host and Asian Cup 2000 winners), France (World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000 winners), Brazil (Copa America 1999 winners), Mexico (Confederations Cup 1999 winners), Cameroon (African Cup of Nations 2000 winners), Canada (CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 winners) and Australia (OFC Nations Cup 2000 winners).
