World Cup 2010 Warm Up: Red hot Chile win and win
If World Cup warm up matches were the main indicator of how teams will do in the finals, then Chile would be one of the favourites going into the tournament in South Africa. Their form since securing qualification has been outstanding, winning five out of six friendlies played this calendar year and only conceding two goals in the process. The have now won their last three matches keeping three successive clean sheets and they won twice yesterday alone!
Chile played two matches of their extensive World Cup finals preparation programme yesterday, using different teams in a double header against Northern Ireland in Chillan and then versus Israel in Concepcion. The side chosen to face the Irish was though to be the slightly weaker of the two, but they produced the goods as some of the fringe players vied for a place in the final squad on the plane to South Africa. Colo Colo striker Esteban Paredes scored his 6th international goal in the 31st minute of the game to secure a 1-0 win against an experimental Irish line up.
The second game of the day brought an impressive 3-0 victory against Israel with a first half strike from Monterrey’s Humberto Suazo, his 18th for his country and second half goals from Alexis Sanchez of Udinese (his 11th international goal) and Rodrigo Tello of Besiktas, who found the net for the third time in a Chile shirt to round off the scoring in the last minute.
Chile’s next outing will be in their opening Group H match against Honduras in Nelspruit on the 16th of June and they will be hoping that their run of success continues.

Chile begin World Cup preparations with a win

Chile: Cristopher Toselli, Jose Pedro Fuenzalida, Hans Martinez, Marco Estrada, Roberto Cereceda (Jose Martínez 73), Charles Aranguiz, Edson Puch (Eduardo Vargas 82), Rodrigo Millar, Daud Gazale, Esteban Paredes, Emilio Hernandez (Francisco Castro 85)
Panama: Jose Calderon, Luis Moreno, Adolfo Machado, Carlos Rivera, Omar Camargo (Martin Gomez 73), Ricardo Phillips (Leonel Parrich 85), Amilcar Henriquez (Ricardo Amor 89), Alejandro Velez, Gabriel Torres (Jean McClean 55), Luis Angel Rodriguez (Armando Cooper 57), Edwin Aguilar (Roberto Brown 76)
Chile began their World Cup preparations with a convincing victory over Panama in Coquimbo. Coach Marcelo Bielsa opted to use mainly home based players in this friendly encounter, with Emilio Hernandez of Mexican club Cruz Azul the only exception, and he witnessed an impressive display from some of his fringe players.
It was a hard fought first half, with both goalkeepers making decent saves to keep the scoresheet blank at the interval but ‘La Roja’ dominate the second period and Colo-Colo striker Esteban Paredes won the match with two goals in three minutes just after half time to move himself up the pecking order for a place on the place to South Africa.
From then on the result was never in doubt, especially after Panama were reduced to ten men when Alejandro Velez was sent off for a foul on Paredes int he 64th minute. Rodrigo Millar missed a good chance to put the home side three up and Chile failed to turn their possession and neat passing into goals. A late consolation goal from Roberto Brown gave the final score a deceptively close look.
The Chilean FA will announce the full programme of World Cup warm up matches for their national team on Tuesday the 26th January 2010. The are currently finalising the list of opponents and dates to best prepare the squad for the World Cup Group H matches against Spain, Switzerland and Honduras.
