Euro 1988 – West Germany

Euro 1988 – West Germany

Group A ¦ Group B ¦ Knockout ¦ Top Scorers

The format for the eighth edition of the European Championship finals in West Germany remained unchanged from that of four years earlier. The host nation comfortably qualified for the semi finals along with Italy but the best teams and the star of the tournament emerged from the other group where Valery Lobanovsky’s well-oiled Soviet machine pipped the Dutch for top spot. However, the individual brilliance of Marco Van Basten won the day when the two met again in the final in Munich.
