Euro 1996 – England
Group A ¦ Group B ¦ Group C ¦ Group D ¦ Knockout ¦ Top Scorers
There were a couple of major changes for the tenth edition of the European Championships in England. Firstly, the tournament doubled in size to incorporate sixteen finalists and secondly, three points were awarded for each win in the group stage the first time. The theme was ‘football’s coming home’ and buoyed on by the fantastic home support, England came as close as ever to lifting the trophy, going out on penalties to eventual winners Germany. The final was settled by a golden goal in extra time.
