The nineteenth World Cup was the first to take place on the continent of Africa. The opening game was on Friday 11th June 2010 in Soccer City, Johannesburg and the final is on Sunday 11th July 2010 at the same venue. Thirty-two teams took part in the finals. Hosts South Africa qualified automatically and they were joined by the thirty-one successful qualifiers. The qualification process began in August 2007 and was completed in November 2009 ahead of the draw for the finals on the 4th/5th December 2009. Matches took place at ten venues around South Africa:
